Alkoomi 2020 Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

Big red wines don't make the tasting bench as often as they should. Pinot Noir and Shiraz seems to be favoured, among the very many whites, skinsy and minimal intervention blends we seem to be drinking truckloads of recently. Its nice to pop the lips around a bold, robust and intense red.

This is a big juicy wine, loaded with cassis and blackberries. It is blended from nine different blocks picked over two weeks before maturation for just over a year in new French oak. There are lots of leafy and fresh herb notes in here, with a mild hint of eucalyptus and some earthy and spice notes. Its rich and delicious, and tempts us to hop into it with gusto.

The palate is also incredibly rich with dark berries, rich fruits and dark chocolate. There are some hints of black olive, tobacco and vanilla and more time in the glass opens this up. Cellaring over some time will temper out some of the gravelly tannins which are velvety and silky but also, fairly firm.

Textural, weighted and with lovely length, Sandy and Rob Hallett and their family are farming on a long established Frankland River property and continue to produce beautifully crafted wines. Low environmental impact and a commitment to sustainability makes this an even more attractive purchase and for the price, it is fantastic value for money as well.
